Warren General Hospital Achieves Critical Access Designation
WARREN, PA – February 6, 2026 – Warren General Hospital received notice that they have been designated as a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This designation was retroactive effective January 14, 2026. This important federal designation will ensure that high-quality medical services and 24/7 essential emergency care remain a permanent part of the Warren community and surrounding rural areas. More than 100 rural hospitals have closed in the U.S. over the last decade; this designation will help strengthen the hospital’s financial standing and protect it against similar threats.
The preparation to apply for Critical Access status started over 12 months ago. This status ensures cost-based reimbursement from Medicare, allowing the hospital to reinvest directly into its services. This reinvestment will help to maintain services for our patients and the community.
"The CAH designation is a testament to our commitment to providing high-quality, accessible care right here in our community. We join other excellent rural hospitals in Pennsylvania in this important mission during a time when many rural hospitals are facing uncertainty," said Dan Grolemund, CEO. "This designation provides the financial stability we need to keep our doors open, our technology current, and our care local."
Grolemund continues, “While the Critical Access Hospital (CAH) designation provides a stronger financial floor; it cannot solve the national physician shortage on its own. The designation provides funds to maintain buildings and equipment; it cannot "fund" providers who are unavailable in the current national recruitment landscape. What it will do is secure our status as a Critical Access Hospital and ensure that while we navigate these challenges, the rest of the hospital remains open, stable, and ready to serve the community.”
The Critical Access Hospital designation supports both the hospital and its patients. Key benefits include:
Continuing Services: With improved financial stability, the hospital can reinvest in enhancing local healthcare services. This includes upgrading outpatient services, the Warren Medical Group, rehabilitation services, and medical equipment.
Commitment to Patient-Centered Care: As a CAH, Warren General Hospital will maintain its focus on high-quality, patient-centered care. The hospital's size and structure enable it to remain a responsive and trusted provider, offering personalized care that meets the specific needs of the local population.
Financial Stability: The CAH designation allows the hospital to receive better Medicare reimbursement, protecting essential services from financial pressures. This is a critical step in ensuring the long-term viability of the hospital.
The CAH designation is not a change in the hospital's mission, but rather an enhancement of its ability to fulfill it. Warren General Hospital will continue to provide 24/7 emergency care and a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient services.
"This new chapter for Warren General Hospital means we can look forward to a healthier, more secure future for our community," added Kathryn Carlson, COO. "By achieving this status, we are ensuring that Warren General remains a stable, reliable partner in health for every resident, now and for generations to come."
