Medical Laboratory Scientist

  • Type: Full-time

  • Pay Rate: $23.47 - $37.30 per hour

    Sign-On Bonus up to $15,000 based on experience! 

    Essential Job Duties:

    • Performs laboratory procedures as written in department manuals

    • Performs phlebotomies on patients for tests requested or verbally ordered by physicians

    • Determines specimen eligibility for testing and initiates corrective action for unacceptable specimens.

    • Performs, evaluates, documents and reports results of laboratory tests, quality control.

    • Performs quality control, proficiency studies, statistical findings and generates department reports.

    • Performs instrument and reagent correlations, validations, and parallel testing.

    • Operates, maintains and does repairs on instruments used to perform clinical tests, recognizes abnormal performance and takes corrective action.

    • Assists in orientation and instruction of new personnel and co-workers in new procedures and techniques.

    • Coordinates workflow within department

    • Works without direct supervision in “on-call” situations.

    • Prepares specimens for reference laboratory testing.

    • Assists pathologist, supervisor and physicians in special procedures such as bone marrows, autopsies, frozen sections and therapeutic phlebotomies

    • Assists physicians and staff when consulted on laboratory procedures for diagnosis and treatment.

    • Accurately prepares reagents, solutions, media, etc.

    • Deals with a variety of situations (e.g. emergency, stat, routine, etc.) requiring sound judgment, logical thinking and responsible action.

    • Maintains an intradepartmental working knowledge of the laboratory

    • Orders supplies to maintain a working inventory.

    • Serves on hospital committees and participates in in-service programs.

    • Evaluates new procedures, methods, and instrumentations.

    • Performs special assignments and related duties as assigned.

    • Develops and writes policies and procedures as needed or directed

    Work/Education requirements:

    • ASCP-MT or equivalent certification eligible. Certification eligible employees must take a certification exam within one year of hire and must be certified within two years of employment.

    • Basic computer skills.

    • Must meet state and federal requirements for medical technologists
