Nurse Manager, Surgical Services (RN)


The Surgical Services, Nurse Manager has responsibility and accountability for patient care administration and practice within Endoscopy, One Day Surgery, Recovery Room, Central Sterile Processing, and the Operating Room Suite. You are responsible for the efficient and effective operation of the areas of responsibility and will support the hospital mission, vision, and corporate goals while developing a workforce that consistently strives to exceed stated standards. Interpretation and implementation of policies, procedures, standards, and regulations related to patient care is an essential component of the job.

I. Planning and Coordinating:

· Participates in the development of specific goals, objectives, standards, policies and procedures that are evidence based and consistent with the organizational mission.

· Implements and evaluates the goals and objectives within areas of responsibility.

· Develops standards of care, policies and protocols for areas of responsibility, which are consistent with the program vision, research based practice, and professional practice standards and reflects current literature.

II. Quality Management:

· Ensures the provision of excellence and expertise in patient care through a process of continuous quality improvement.

· Ensures the development and maintenance of patient centered model of care.

· Creates an environment that supports creativity and innovation in the delivery of patient care.

III. Resource Allocation:

· Recommends and ensures appropriate human resources to meet the care needs of patients within the areas of direct responsibility.

· Ensures the preparation of the annual operating and capital budgets for areas of direct responsibility consistent with the direction of the overall program. Prepares and assesses projections of capital equipment required for the long term (5 years).

· Ensures monthly expenditures/revenue as per budget projection and is responsible for cost control and effective and efficient utilization of budget.

· Recruits, interviews, hires, and ensures orientation; promotes, disciplines and dismisses personnel within direct responsibility.

· Conducts performance appraisals and competency evaluations for direct reports yearly and as needed.

IV. Communication:

· Ensures the establishment of clear lines of communication to facilitate ongoing open communication and feedback systems with all health care providers, the organizations as a whole and the community.

· Create an environment that fosters, encourages and values the input of all voices of the health care team.

· Communicates and maintains liaison with anesthesiologists, surgeons, nursing management, ancillary personnel and various inpatient and outpatient units to communicate schedule changes.

VI. Education

· Establishes cost-effective educational programs that meet the professional needs of staff.

· Promotes training and development opportunities for staff.

· Establishes and supports patient/family education programs as needed.

VII. Leadership

· Initiates and manages change effectively in a rapidly changing environment.

· Seeks out new opportunities and approaches to problem solving, quality improvement and productivity.

· Encourages initiative by giving responsibility, resources and authority.

VII. Evaluation

· Ensures an evaluation system that is consistent with practice standards, ethics, and licensure/other requirements. Ensures ongoing evolution of systems through established practice standards.

· Identifies, monitors, and evaluates performance improvement standards.

· Evaluate patient care data and workload information to ensure that patient health needs are being met in an appropriate, safe and timely manner.

Required Education/Certification/Licensure:

· Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Nurse

· BSN required; MSN, MBA, MHA or related equivalent preferred

· Three years recent OR nursing experience

· Supervisory experience with proven track record in process improvement preferred

Required Skills and Abilities:

· Knowledge of current trends and practices in surgical services

· Skill in providing training, education and supervision of employees

· Skill in responding to and resolving patient/staff/physician issues and concerns
