Who We Are
Providing inpatients with the medications and medication therapy management required to attain clinical goals, the Pharmacy at WGH works closely with the Medical and Professional staffs.
Located on WGH’s third floor, the Department of Pharmacy Services is staffed by a group of dedicated professionals, including Clinical Pharmacists and Certified Pharmacy Technicians. Each of the Pharmacists has completed academic requirements for the Doctor of Pharmacy degree, some with additional residency and/or fellowship training in a specialty area of Pharmacotherapy including Pharmacokinetics, Infectious Disease and Critical Care. In addition, two WGH Pharmacists have attained specialty certification by completing rigorous examinations offered by the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. Several WGH Pharmacists hold academic appointments at the University of Pittsburgh and the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and Pharmacy.
Clinical Pharmacists at WGH are responsible for monitoring and recommending optimal drug therapy to achieve disease-specific evidence-based goals. This is achieved by Physician requested clinical consultation for managing drug-related effectiveness, resolving drug-related adverse events and preventing drug-related problems.
To guarantee the safety of patients, the Pharmacy at WGH utilizes the latest technology in the provision of prescription drug therapy. Pharmacists have on-line access to MicroMedex, an on-line database of comparative clinical information for all drugs and drug therapy for specific disease states. In addition WGH features medication distribution utilizing Omnicell, computerized devices linked to patient’s medical profiles that ensure accurate delivery of the correct medication, correct dose and correct time to patients at the bedside.
The Pharmacy at WGH is open Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. To provide a constant presence and to provide the Medical Staff with expanded Pharmacy services, Pharmacists are on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
