Living a Healthy Lifestyle
If you are living with diabetes, pre-diabetes, gestational diabetes or heart disease, Warren General Hospital offers diabetes education that is certified by the American Diabetes Association, and nutritional therapy services.
Medicare and some private insurance carriers now recognize the value of nutrition management and cover this service with a written physician’s order.
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a lifelong disease in which the body either cannot produce enough insulin or cannot use the insulin it does produce. Without insulin, the body cannot use food for energy. Using the right treatment tools, a person can live a normal, active life with diabetes.
The most common types are:
-
Type 2 diabetes: A chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar.
-
Gestational diabetes: A form of high blood sugar affecting pregnant women.
-
Prediabetes: A condition in which blood sugar is high, but not high enough to be type 2 diabetes.
-
Type 1 diabetes: A chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin.
