Cardiac Rehab at RehabWorks

Current statics show heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year, making heart disease responsible for 1 in every 4 deaths.

Rehab Works at Warren General Hospital offers a Cardiac Rehab program that not only helps the individual return to a full and active life after experiencing a major cardiac episode, but also reduces the risk of future cardiac events and associated health problems.  Cardiac Rehab provides a medically supervised recovery environment for people who have recently experienced heart problems such as, a heart attack, bypass surgery, angioplasty, or stable angina.

One of the unique elements of the Cardiac Rehab program at Rehab Works is that it is tailored to the needs and abilities of each individual.  The program includes a 12 week session that consists of exercise, education, and counseling that is targeted to each participant’s individual ability.  The hour long sessions are held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings in the Rehab Works department at Warren General Hospital.

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday sessions focus on cardio exercise and include a warm-up, aerobic activity, and cool-down based on ability.  A blood pressure and pulse check is taken before the exercise session begins and continues to be monitored throughout the session by the registered nurse on duty.  Educations sessions are also conducted on Wednesdays and cover topics such as diet and nutrition, medications, stress management, emotional aspects, and goal setting.

Some of the benefits participants can gain from Cardiac Rehab include increased understanding of heart disease, increased circulation and exercise tolerance, improved weight control, decreased cholesterol levels, increased awareness of good nutrition, decrease in blood pressure, ability to recognize risk factors and control them, and the ability to modify lifestyle by decreasing stress and increasing self-confidence.

Dixie Brumagin, RN and Justin McKown, CAN are the registered nurses on staff for the Cardiac Rehab program.  Staff physicians are Dr. Timothy Stanton and Dr. Dale McNett.  A physician’s referral is required to enroll.  Most major insurance carriers cover Rehab Works’ Cardiac Rehab program.  For more information call (814) 723-4973 Ext. 1745 or visit www.wgh.org .  Be smart about your heart!
